Meetings
From engaging with local communities, experts, and CSOs to reaching out to ambassadors and decision-makers at the national and EU levels, we strive to advocate for Komarnica's well-being and emphasize the urgent need to halt the dam(n) hydropower plans.

In early June, we met with MEP Thomas Waitz, Co-Chair of the European Greens and a leading voice for nature protection, on the slopes of Komarnica. Waitz played a key role in the protection of Albania’s Vjosa River, now Europe’s first Wild River National Park.
Together, we explored Komarnica’s most valuable sites, pointing to its natural and cultural significance, and the threats posed by the long-planned hydropower project.
We also shared the efforts of our citizen-led initiative working to protect the river. This visit strengthens international ties and support for Komarnica’s lasting preservation.

We were invited to a meeting with DG Climate Action and the EU Delegation in Montenegro to discuss the country’s progress in climate policy and energy transition. Our main focus was the planned hydropower plant on the Komarnica River and other unsustainable and unjustified hydropower projects in development. We emphasized the need to exclude environmentally harmful projects—such as Komarnica HPP—that have been promoted for years under the guise of renewable energy, from government plans and EU funding.

A central two-day networking event was organized as part of the protest-educational camp "Save Komarnica," bringing together domestic and international experts, activists, and local residents. As a result of this dialogue, a joint strategy and action plan for the preservation of the Komarnica Canyon was developed.

At the invitation of the President of Montenegro, Jakov Milatović, we had the opportunity to openly discuss the pressing challenges threatening Montenegro’s natural environment. Unfortunately, we are facing alarming issues, from legal violations to the brutal destruction of nature on the ground.
One of the key topics we addressed was the case of the Komarnica River. We openly criticized the lack of action and the persistent disregard shown by successive governments—including the current administration—for the need to protect our most valuable natural resources.

EU Comission
Together with representatives of European Biodiversity Survey group, we handed over the Komarnica biodiversity preliminary report to Madalina Laxton from the Directorate of the Environment of EU Comission.
Mrs. Laxton was happy to be informed about the case.
The preliminary report, that shows the amazing biodiversity value of Komarnica, is a result of a 6-days long expedition of a team of scientists from different EU countries.

We walked along the slopes of Komarnica with representatives from the embassies of France, Romania, and Azerbaijan, as well as a representative of the National Tourism Organisation.
This is one of a series of "Ambassadors’ Walk & Talk" events through which we aim not only to discuss Komarnica but also to showcase it to representatives of various countries, who in turn share their knowledge, experience, and advice with us.
The organization of this event was supported by River Collective.
